Even though Dragon Ball Super doesn't really pride itself on biological accuracy, the question of the Saiyan tail and their general biology has long perplexed fans. The series' latest chapter puts a series of events into an order that suggests these tails may hold a yet-to-be-exposed secret that could change a major Saiyan weakness forever.
In Dragon Ball lore, Saiyans are born with monkey-like tails, which enable them to transform into their kaiju-sized Great Ape form. This is one of the oldest transformations in the series, dating back to Goku's childhood before the concept of a Saiyan even existed. The switch to Dragon Ball Z introduced Goku's long-lost brother Raditz and the Saiyan race, making Goku one of a handful of survivors of a nearly-extinct species. This brought with it legends of a «Super Saiyan,» a powerful form that had supposedly been attained long ago, but which no one knew how to do. It made for an epic build-up for Goku's eventual achievement of this form on Namek, creating one of the most iconic moments in manga history. The idea that no one on planet Vegeta was able to utilize Super Saiyan has always seemed strange, however. Surely there have been powerful warriors over the years, even people like Broly with a ridiculous amount of raw power, yet no one has achieved it in so long that it's regarded as a myth.
