After over a decade of waiting, Avatar fans have finally received some good news. As part of CinemaCon, which is being held in Las Vegas, Disney has unveiled the first official trailer for the much-awaited sequel in the franchise and even revealed the film’s official title. Now known as Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron's next mega venture arrives in theaters on December 16.
It was already known that Cameron is working on four sequels to Avatar, which was first released in 2009, and Producer Jon Landau has confirmed that each project will focus on the Sully family. “Each story will be a standalone and each will come to its own conclusion,” he said at CinemaCon. The purpose, however, is to create a “larger epic saga.” Only time will tell if the Avatar films will be able to live up to fan expectations.

Even though the official trailer was for exhibition attendees’ eyes online, fans will be able to watch it pretty soon. It was confirmed during CinemaCon that the Avatar: The Way of Water trailer will play exclusively in theaters with Marvel Studio's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres on May 6. The trailer will also be posted online a week after for the world to see. Some details from the trailer have emerged, and Deadline reports that it focuses on Sam Worthington's Jake Sully living with his family on the planet of Pandora. After “a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started,” Sully must unite forces with the Na'vi race to ensure Pandora's safety.
