Zoe Saldaña explains why the release of Avatar: The Way of Water is nerve-wracking. The actress first played Na’vi princess Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar (2009). The film told the simple, yet effective story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a disabled marine who’s drawn into the world of Pandora and its conflict with humanity after falling in love with Neytiri and, in turn, the native culture. In addition to receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, Avatar became a pop culture phenomenon and the highest-grossing film of all-time thanks in large part to its ground-breaking special effects and use of 3D.
Despite writer/director Cameron planning four sequels, audiences haven’t seen Pandora on the big screen for over a decade. Two of those sequels have already been filmed, with the first coming out on December 16, 2022, and the second currently set for release on December 20, 2024. Last week at CinemaCon, Disney showed the first footage from the newly titled Avatar: The Way of Water, which promises to push the boundaries of technology with its underwater scenes. The sequel is easily one of the most anticipated projects of the year, and Saldaña, whose sci-fi profile has risen exponentially since that first film, has shared how she feels about the film’s upcoming release.
