Robert Eggers’ The Northman features Amleth brutally battling two notable figures on his search for vengeance, both of which oddly connect to Game of Thrones. Just as Game of Thrones took some medieval lore as inspiration for its story,The Northman adapts the notable Scandanavian legend of Amleth into a bloody Viking revenge film. As Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) seeks vengeance on his uncle Fjolnir for murdering his father and taking his mother, he must battle several deadly foes in order to reach his fate.
Following Amleth’s journey as a violent Viking berserker, he is redirected on his path for vengeance, which means arriving at Fjolnir’s farm masqueraded as a Slavic slave. On one occasion, Amleth is chosen to fight in The Northman’s brutal Viking ball game, knattleikr, which ends with a one-on-one fight with Thorfinnr, a massive opponent who nearly kills Amleth’s brother Gunnar. Shortly after, Amleth’s path sees him battle the giant undead Mound Dweller for the sword that will be used to kill Fjolnir. Amleth miraculously wins both fights in The Northman, with the two foes being reminiscent of their previous shared Game of Thrones connection.

Thorfinnr, who Amleth brutally kills in The Northman's Viking game by bashing his head into his face, is portrayed by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who most notably played Ser Gregor Clegane — perhaps better known as The Mountain — in Game of Thrones. Björnsson took over the role in Game of Thrones season 4 after the second Gregor Clegane actor, Ian Whyte, felt more comfortable playing the show’s alternative massive characters like the Freefolk Giant Wun Wun.
