The road to redemption taken by The Northman's protagonist, Amleth, parallels the path of one of Game of Thrones' most memorable anti-heroes. Robert Eggers' The Northman has been a serious hit with audiences and critics alike despite The Northman bombing at the box office. Eggers' latest visionary film is as typically gut-wrenching as it is gory, drawing inevitable comparisons to HBO's viscera-strewn Game of Thrones.
Both The Northman and Game of Thrones depict a world of brutality and cruelty, a product created by those who inhabit them. Violence is commonplace, and the possession of power is key to survival. In worlds of such unjust balance and callous nature, both Robert Eggers and George R.R. Martin are keen to highlight the need for morality and honor in lawless environments — and do so through a pair of characters strikingly similar in their methods.

The Northman shares an obvious Game of Thrones connection regarding the similarities between Amleth and Sandor Clegane, better known as The Hound. Not only do both men share aesthetic attributes, but the journeys they embark on are also strikingly similar. Each character endures excruciating childhood trauma that fuels and drives them toward their respective routes of revenge. However, by no means are their paths for revenge simple, as Amleth and Sandor face near-death experiences yet ultimately fulfill their destinies and conquer their foes. Although Amleth and Sandor lose their lives in combat, bettering their respective adversaries, their obligatory divine right aids them in their goals.
