A Kindling Forest is a new game by Dennis Berndtsson, a solo developer who’s also a high-school teacher. It’s an action adventure or rather, to be specific, a side-scrolling auto-runner full of clever mechanics. Forests, arrows and well, a lot of lava, are what the game has!
An ancient demon has been wreaking havoc on the world. So, the forest spirits wake up an archer from the past, hand him a bow and send him on a mission to take the demon down. But nothing about A Kindling Forest is actually straightforward!
You’re constantly on the move. In fact, in A Kindling Forest, the screen keeps scrolling with plenty of shards. These are sharp, nasty obstacles which come in all sorts of wild shapes and patterns. You get two choices as usual: dodge them or shoot them down with your arrows.
The arrows are your lifeline. They’re literally the forest spirits helping you out. Run out of arrows, and you lose. So, every shot you take has to count.
A Kindling Forest has five levels, each more chaotic than the last. You’ll be jumping over spiders, teleporting to mysterious ruins, flying over clouds and even dealing with lava.
The checkpoints scattered around act as lifesavers for you. They let you start over and try new strategies if you’ve messed up.
In A Kindling Forest, your phone’s screen is split in two. One half for jumping and the other for shooting, and timing is everything in the game. There’s even a bit of slow motion when you aim your shots, giving you just enough time to line up.
