Popular online chat platform Discord is being more closely integrated into the PlayStation 5 system software, allowing users to join Discord voice chats directly from their consoles without relying on mobile of PC apps. The functionality is being rolled out region-by-region in the coming weeks.
The rollout is starting with Japan/Asia, followed by Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and the Middle East, and finally the Americas. You will need to have the latest PS5 system software installed, and also link your PSN and Discord accounts together.
Once enabled, Discord will be found within the Game Base area of the PS5 system software, where you’ll see established voice chat channels on servers that you are joined up to, letting you hop straight in. You’ll also be able to have direct voice chats person-to-person.
This is a huge simplification over the previous process which requires users to join a voice chat by sending it to the console from your smartphone or PC app. That form of PS5 Discord integration was available since last March.
All of this means that PS5 gamers will be on a part with Xbox gamers, who have had direct Discord access since late 2022.
Discord in general has become a go-to chat platform for gamers, and it’s a massive boon to have it integrated across all platforms to cater to cross-platform online gaming in particular. Of course, you can also just use it to hang out and chat with friends while playing different games or just relaxing and reading a book.
