As the 3-issue miniseriesRobin & Batman explores Dick Grayson’s beginning as the Boy Wonder, elements of his backstory are being rewritten. Among the changes is the sidekick’s iconic red and green outfit. The first Robin’s newest costume redesign can be seen on the cover of Robin & Batman #2, written by Jeff Lemire with art by Dustin Nguyen.

Dick’s latest Robin suit might be the most well-designed version ever. While deconstructing the traditional suit, the costume remains minimal and ditches a few common elements. The yellow buckles on the chest, along with the black circle behind the “R” have been omitted, and it surprisingly works. The Boy Wonder retains his immediately recognizable look, but with an updated sense of cool that feels like it should have been implemented many years ago. Now donning yellow-gold shoulder pads, with a matching collar, and belt, Dick’s suit has reduced multiple details down to the essentials.
As Dustin Nguyen’s redesign honors the original version illustrated by Bill Finger by keeping the same spirit, it also pushes Dick Grayson’s tenure as Robin into the future. The suit even has a few commonalities with Damian Wayne’s take on the Boy Wonder persona, including his green finned gloves, angular domino mask, black pants, and sleeves.
