Over the years, we have seen some truly bizarre microtransactions and DLC add-ons, especially ever since the advent of the live-service genre. Almost every publisher is guilty of overpricing skins or cosmetics, with Capcom, Square Enix, and Electronic Arts all having fairly recent controversies surrounding cosmetic prices in the past 12 months. Activision Blizzard is considered by gamers as the king of overpriced cosmetics though, as it has displayed once again with Diablo 4.
First pointed out by Reddit user Mwatki20 a few days ago, a new cosmetic set on the PlayStation Store is offering Diablo 4 players the chance to purchase some portal recolors, which will change the color of your fast-travel portal from its traditional color to one of five different colors, alongside $10 worth of premium currency. There are a couple of catches though, the first and biggest being the fact that the bundle costs a whopping $30.
You'll find no shortage of Diablo 4 players fuming at the absurdity of the price tag, with some pointing out that the price of these portal recolors is almost half of the full game, and that you can even buy current popular games such as Palworld for the same price. Throw in an extra five dollars and you can buy Helldivers 2 as well, a game by a developer that recently said games should "earn the right to monetize".
This is so outrageous that when they offer convenient stash tabs for $10-$15 it won't seem so bad. Expect more things like this first though.
To really pour salt on the wounds, Reddit user Patient_Competition4 points out that these portal recolors are actually class locked too, meaning only certain classes can have certain colors. While buying the bundle will get you all the portals, you'll only be able to use the blue portal with a Sorcerer, a purple portal with a Rogue, a white portal with a Druid, and so on. If you don't use those classes, you can't use their corresponding portals.
It's pretty sad, but Activision Blizzard fans probably won't
