If you aren't happy with the 800p display Valve installed in the Steam Deck, an unofficial 1200p replacement is in the works.
The 1920-by-1200 display is called DeckHD(Opens in a new window) and has been developed by London-based devices and accessories manufacturer FX Technology Limited(Opens in a new window). The 7-inch screen is estimated to cost $99 and promises to outperform the original Steam Deck display in more than just resolution.
As well as the 1200p upgrade, the DeckHD supports 95% of sRGB compared to the original display's 67%. It matches the original by offering 400 nits of brightness and 60Hz refresh rates. You'll also get an anti-glare coating, which is only included as standard on the 512GB model of the Steam Deck.
For now, there's no release date for the DeckHD, only a waitlist to join. That $99 price point could also easily change depending on what happens with the global economy and price of components in the coming weeks/months.
As PCGamesN(Opens in a new window) points out, there are a number of reasons upgrading the Steam Deck to a 1200p display isn't a good idea. For one, the AMD Zen 2 APU could struggle to cope with the higher resolution and potentially impact your enjoyment of certain games. Battery life will also be negatively hit, and because it's not an official Steam Deck component, the DeckHD will likely invalidate your warranty.
If you want a PC gaming handheld with a higher resolution display, then the Asus ROG is worth considering. It's going to ship with a 1080p 7-inch display sporting a 120Hz refresh rate. It also uses a faster processor than the Steam Deck and runs Windows 11.
