It's been more than 30 years since Deadpool made his comic book debut in the pages of Marvel Comics, but the Merc with a Mouth would love his very first words in continuity. InNew Mutants #98, Deadpool introduces himself in a battle against Cable, where he tells the time-traveling antihero that he was hired to take him down. Surely, Deadpool would appreciate that his first words are about and directed towards his now-favorite friend, Nathan Summers.
Deadpool might be one of Marvel's most popular heroes now thanks to his comic book adventures and the Ryan Reynold's-starring live-action films based on the character, but Wade Wilson has evolved considerably since debuting in 1991. Originally, Deadpool, co-created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, wasn't the wise-cracking, lovable antihero fans know today, Instead, the character was played in a much more straightforward fashion who was a Deathstroke retread. Ultimately, creators like Joe Kelly, Christopher Priest, and Gail Simone would introduce and embrace the more humorous elements that are a core part of him today. However, Deadpool's relationship with Cable has always been an important part of the hero's characterization.

Long before Deadpool would become a pop culture icon, the character's debut in New Mutants #98 from Marvel Comics would set the stage for his friendship with Cable. In the comic by Nicieza and Liefeld, Wade Wilson's first words are asking whether Cable is Nathan. Deadpool introduces himself and tells him he's been hired to kill him. Ultimately, Cable takes down the (at the time) villain and mails him back to his employer to send a message.
