The much-awaited sequel is nearing its release date but has already received early reviews from critics. The movie marks the arrival of Ryan Reynolds’ titular mercenary into the MCU while also bringing back Hugh Jackman’s iconic take on Wolverine from the live-action X-Men films. However, despite the excitement surrounding their big-screen team-up, early reviews have resulted in the lowest critic scores for the Deadpool films so far.
While Deadpool & Wolverine has received many positive reviews already, it has also received the lowest critic review scores for the Deadpool films on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Deadpool & Wolverine currently has a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 81% from 149 reviews. This is just below the 85% score achieved by the first film and the 84% score for Deadpool 2. However, on Metacritic, the film has garnered a more middling score of 55 from 47 reviews.
Notably, 40% of the Metacritic reviews for Deadpool & Wolverine have landed in the mixed category. Only 11% of these reviews fall into the negative section on the site. Los Angeles Times‘ Katie Walsh was one of the reviewers who gave the film a lukewarm rating of 50. Her review called the film “a whole lot of hot air and not much else.”
Donald Clarke of The Irish Times also harshly criticized the movie for its corporate-based humor and for being “relentlessly juvenile.”
However, the film has also received a high degree of praise from a large number of critics. ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim stated that it is a movie “that comic nerds and film buffs alike can celebrate.” The Critics Consensus for the film’s “Certified Fresh” critics score on Rotten Tomatoes calls the film “an irreverent romp with a surprising soft spot for a bygone era of superhero movies.”
