People really didn't like Dead Space 3. It moved from horror into action with an emphasis on co-op, serving as the Resident Evil 5 of the series. It does have its fans (I like it, sue me), but most look at it with disdain, marking it as little more than a blemish on an otherwise iconic horror series. Even co-producer and writer Chuck Beaver isn't fond of it.
As reported by PCGamesN, Beaver said in an interview with the CaptainBribo podcast, "Now in this remake territory, I would redo Dead Space 3 almost completely, but I would keep the lore beat it's predicated on, and I would have Ellie there but in a different relationship [with Isaac] and redo the entire main story".
We weren't allowed to make a horror game from the beginning.
Back when Dead Space 3 launched, the horror triple-A scene wasn't nearly as big as it is today or even in the years preceding its launch. The indie scene was thriving and let's plays of spooky games were all the rage, but even the landmark horror series' like Resident Evil were moving into the cover shooter co-op genre.
According to Beaver, in this new landscape, Dead Space 3 was never allowed to be a horror game. However, if he were to go back today, he would rip out as much of the co-op and action elements as he could in what would undoubtedly be a more faithful sequel.
While Dead Space 3 isn't strictly horror in the same way the first two games were, it definitely had its fair share of unsettling moments. One of which was how the game handled the same scenarios between two characters. You could see different visuals and hallucinations depending on who you were playing, and this is something Beaver would keep in his hypothetical re-imagining.
