Dead by Daylight just dropped a short seven-second clip of a flashlight on a table illuminating a stack of blood-stained papers with the caption, "Learn more on January 9".
There are a couple of things this could mean - DBD is nerfing flashlights or Alan Wake DLC is about to be announced.
For context, survivors in Dead by Daylight can use flashlights to stun killers as the harsh beam blinds them. There have been a lot of complaints, with calls to remove the flashlight entirely from those who prefer to queue as killers, while others see it as a must-have tool for survivors to hold their own. It's a divisive piece of kit, to say the least, with some going as far as to call for a separate no-flashlight mode.
However, it's worth looking at what the flashlight is pointing at - a seemingly innocuous stack of dirty old paper. The flashlight itself is already an iconic part of Alan Wake's mythos, as he uses it to fend off the Shadows. But the stack of paper may be a hint to another key part of Alan Wake's iconography - his manuscript, the early workings of his novel that Scratch uses to torment him in the Dark Place.
Combine the paper and the flashlight and you have a pretty convincing case for an Alan Wake tease. It wouldn't be the first survival horror game that Dead by Daylight has crossed over with either, as we've seen both Silent Hill and Resident Evil characters venture into the purgatory Realms. That's not to mention that Alan Wake 2 was a huge hit for Remedy, being a Game of the Year contender. All the ingredients are there for Wake's Dead by Daylight debut, so a flashlight popping up on Twitter is probably pointing at the tormented writer himself.
