Recent Star Wars comics reveal that Darth Vader humiliated the ancient Sith Lord who inspired Emperor Palpatine's darkest strategy. Palpatine may have been Darth Vader's master, but in truth they wanted very different things. Both Sith Lords sought power — but for Palpatine, it was the power to conquer death for himself, whereas Vader's goal was to resurrect his beloved Padmé. This led the two Sith to pursue very different approaches.
Palpatine — the supreme egotist — was focused on learning how to become eternal. His own master, Darth Plagueis, had discovered the ancient Sith art of essence transfer; this allows a Sith's spirit to possess a host after death. Palpatine's own research into essence transfer led to his acquiring the mask of Darth Momin, an ancient Sith Lord who had successfully transferred his spirit into his mask, and who could possess anyone who wore it. After he became Emperor, Palpatine passed the mask off to Darth Vader, who took it to Mustafar, where Darth Momin served Vader's purposes in constructing his Sith fortress. Betrayal is the way of the Sith, of course, and Darth Momin used the dark side vergence at Mustafar to resurrect himself — before being killed by Vader.
