The latest issue in the Star Wars comics crossover Crimson Reign may have just indicated that Emperor Palpatine controlled the Knights of Ren long before the events of The Force Awakens. The ending to a standoff between the Knights and Darth Vader hints at the potential truth of their independent identity.
The Knights of Ren are a band of Force-sensitive warriors devoted to the dark side. The 2019 comic miniseries The Rise of Kylo Ren sees Ben Solo join their ranks at the prompting of Palpatine through his puppet Snoke. Kylo Ren ascends to the leader of the Knights, and in The Force Awakens he is referred to as the "Master of the Knights of Ren." In The Rise of Skywalker, the Knights are fully under the control of Palpatine. However, during the Crimson Reign crossover, which takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the Knights are allied with the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn, which is devoted to taking down the Sith. When the Knights attempt to steal an artifact called the Screaming Key from Darth Vader's fortress on Mustafar, their true allegiance may be hinted at.

The Knights of Ren’s infiltration of Fortress Vader turns into more of an assault in Crimson Reign #4 by Charles Soule and Steven Cummings. They encounter Darth Vader blocking their exit, however Vader’s brief exchange with Ren after killing one of the Knights outright is rather strange. While he does initially kill one of the members, he does little more than cause minor damage to Ren and briefly attempt to retrieve the key before allowing the Knights to escape.
