The sequel trilogy introduced the Knights of Ren, and Star Wars has revealed there's a sense in which they are the dark opposite of the Sith. The Disney era of Star Wars has expanded the franchise in one particularly notable way; it has introduced countless new Force cults, less famous and influential than the Sith and the Jedi, some committed to the light side and others to the dark. The Knights of Ren number among the most intriguing.
The Knights of Ren appear to have existed for centuries, although by the time of the original trilogy they were led by a man who simply called himself "Ren." They have never been especially prominent, operating in the shadows and usually taking advantage of the treacherous hyperspace routes that characterize the Unknown Regions, hiding from Sith and Jedi alike. And although they are Force-sensitives who commit to the dark side, which they call the "Shadow," they lack the power of the Sith. Few would even be considered powerful enough to be added to the ranks of the Inquisitors should they have been discovered by Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Crimson Reign #4, by Charles Soule and Steven Cummings shows the contrast between the Knights of Ren and the Sith in a single scene, in which they unite their power to telekinetically open an entrance to Darth Vader's tower on Mustafar. No doubt this is a necessity simply because none of the Knights of Ren possess enough power to clear the obstacle on their own, but it also points to a major philosophical difference between the Knights and the Sith.
