Veteran and casual fans that are familiar with BioShock know that the game isn't like other first-person shooter titles. Utilizing horror, sci-fi, and other immersive elements, players explore the underwater city of Rapture and its dark history while trying to survive as the protagonist Jack. But unlike conventional shooters, there is also an RPG-like progression system that can upgrade Jack's abilities and weapons to better go against the odds.

In-game, Jack has access to firearms such as a pistol, shotgun, grenade launcher, crossbow, grenade launcher, and chemical thrower. Combined with the supernatural power of plasmids, these weapons are Jack's main way of dispatching enemies in the depths of Rapture. As players move through the storyline, they will run into various Power to the People upgrade stations that can improve the effects of each weapon such as increased damage, rate of fire, or even immunity to splash damage. There are 12 stations, which can only be used once, scattered throughout Rapture and each weapon can be upgraded twice.
