Connections betweenDarth Vader's fortress and Emperor Palpatine's resurrection reveal a surprising depth to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — even if it's not exactly intentional. The Star Wars saga is generally considered to have ended not with a bang, but a whimper. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is largely seen as an unfortunate end to the sequel trilogy, and is much criticized for its plot holes. The film didn't even bother to explain its central concept, the resurrection of Palpatine, leaving that to tie-in stories.
These have revealed the Sith redoubt of Exegol is a vergence in the Force; a place where the veil between life and death is unusually thin. There, Sith cultists were able to perform a ritual that drew Palpatine's spirit out of the Netherworld of the Force, allowing him to inhabit a clone body. Fortunately for the galaxy, but unfortunately for the Emperor, the process was only partially successful; the clone was unable to contain the vast dark side essence of the Sith Lord, and deteriorated rapidly. The resurrected Emperor found himself trapped on Exegol, eager to guide potential hosts to his side so he could take over their bodies instead.

Surprisingly, though, tie-in comics have revealed striking similarities between Exegol and the planet Mustafar, claimed by Darth Vader as his base of operations shortly after Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.
