In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Daredevil: Woman Without Fear, the dark past of Elektra Natchios is revealed, including a significant retcon involving her long-standing romance with Matt Murdock. The story takes place during the Devil's Reign event where Kingpin has outlawed all superhero activity in New York as its corrupt mayor. He's also deputized supervillains to be his enforcers, giving them every dark secret he's collected over the years. This includes Elektra's secrets, forcing her to come clean in this issue to turn a major weakness into a strength.
As revealed in the first issue of Daredevil: Woman Without Fear from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Rafael de Latorre, Wilson Fisk's war on superheroes saw him giving Kraven the Hunter Elektra's file, revealing that he's known her darkest secret for quite some time. According to this new retcon, Elektra actually gained the attention of the Hand and was recruited much earlier than was believed, being trained by a woman named Aka. Furthermore, it was also revealed that when Elektra and her father moved to America from Greece, Mattew Murdock was Elektra's target rather than their romance coming from a happenstance meeting. However, while Aka wanted Elektra to soften Matt for recruitment into the Hand, her love became real and she couldn't go through with it.
