Based on the novels by Caroline Kepnes, You follows Joe Goldberg, a man searching for love who will do anything to get it, including murdering anyone who gets in his way. Joe's point of view explores a psychodynamic view of obsessive love and how it manifests in narcissistic and sociopathic ways, forcing the audience to see how alluring an entirely id-based perspective can be. You's success points out the fallacy of trying to moralize an inherently immoral protagonist.

Deadline reports the casting of Gage as well as some details about the new character and what it could mean for Joe in the new season. His character, Adam, is the youngest son of a wealthy businessman, unable and unwilling to meet the standards of his illustrious pedigree. Adam's charm and manipulation of others can run concurrently with Joe's desires, for both seem to go to extreme lengths to get what they want, and whether that means friendship or something more hostile for the two is yet to be seen.
Though originally based on Kepnes' novels, You's television adaptation has departed starkly from the books, with the third book You Love Me only sharing the detail that Joe falls for a librarian with the third season. This speaks to the writers trying to break away from the source material and making something almost completely new, a technique which has paid off well, with You season 3 receiving critical acclaim and high ratings on Netflix. Kepnes is currently working on a fourth You novel, which will likely be completely different from the fourth season, and will come out much later given how much longer it takes to write and publish a novel than make a television series.
