The disturbing origin of clowns in the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse has been revealed and it turns out that it involves demonic clowns from outer space. D&D has offered players the chance to play as clowns in older editions of the game, in the form of the Jester kit for bards in AD&D and the bard-like Jester base class in D&D 3e, with bad jokes and tomfoolery being weaponized by magic.
The Spelljammer campaign setting for D&D will be updated for 5e in the upcoming Spelljammer: Adventures in Space set. Spelljammer is a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi, with players using magical sailing ships to explore the universe. The old version of Spelljammer had cosmic horror elements, but it also had its goofy content, as this was the setting that introduced D&D's giant space hamsters, which were bred to run in the giant wheels that power the spelljammer ships used by the gnomes of Krynn. D&D's new version of Spelljammer will retain this mixture of comedy and horror, as that's very much the essence of D&D, with most games never sticking in one genre for long.

Spelljammer is also home to roving bands of space clowns, who travel wildspace on spelljammer ships with massive pie launchers. It was revealed in a video on the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel that the space clowns are the in-universe inspiration for clowns in the D&D multiverse. This is due to space clowns visiting the D&D campaign worlds and leaving their mark on the inhabitants.
