Way back in 2001, Piranha Bites released the fantasy RPG, Gothic. At the time of its release, the game received favorable reviews and moved enough copies to become a full franchise. The Gothic franchise would release two direct sequels and three spinoff games throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, but the franchise went on a complete hiatus in 2011. Now it appears that THQ Nordic is gearing up to bring the franchise back in a big way.
The first Gothic game has a rather unique setup as far as high fantasy RPGs go. In the world, a human kingdom is fighting a losing war against Orcs, and the only chance it has involves magical ore that must be extracted from mines. The main plot of the first Gothic involves the player trying to survive and eventually escape from one of these mines. While the game itself isn't as popular as other fantasy series like Elder Scrolls, Gothic has been noted for its advanced AI at the time of its release.
