Cobra Kai season 5 has just cast a brand new sensei who will be working with Terry Silver. The series is a follow-up to the Karate Kid franchise, which began in 1984 and ran for four films and a remake. The show, which originally premiered on YouTube Red before being picked up by Netflix for seasons 3 and 4, follows a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) reopening the Cobra Kai dojo and accidentally reigniting the rivalry between himself and former All Valley karate champion Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). In addition to a group of new karate students, the series has featured the return of characters including John Kreese (Martin Kove), Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), and The Karate Kid Part II's Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita).
In Cobra Kai season 4, another franchise character returned to the fold. Thomas Ian Griffith reprised the role of Terry Silver, which he originated in 1989's The Karate Kid Part III. Silver has been a longtime antagonist in the franchise, originally the head of Dynatox Industries, a toxic waste disposal company that was poisoning the environment. He teamed up with Kreese to boost Cobra Kai and bring down Daniel and his mentor Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) once and for all. In Cobra Kai he reveals he had been addicted to cocaine during that time, but nevertheless gets sucked back into the world of The Karate Kid to help Kreese face off against Daniel and Johnny, who have now banded together.
