WWE has gone back to a familiar well in Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, and they owe it to the fans to put on a classic match. This is a feud that has essentially defined this era of sports entertainment, as these two superstars always seem to be circling back towards one another. It's Batman against Joker, Goku versus Vegeta, or Jim Halpert opposing Dwight Schrute. It's Vince Mcmahon's new John Cena/Randy Orton rivalry, and with injuries to many top stars throwing summertime plans off track, Reigns against Lesnar felt inevitable.
The original plan was for Reigns to fight Riddle at Money In The Bank, Orton at SummerSlam, and Drew McIntyre at Clash At The Castle in September. There are some in WWE who are worried that Orton won't be able to wrestle again in 2022, Riddle was never a legit title threat and McIntyre isn't on Roman's level right now. All of this opened the door for The Beast Incarnate to crash SmackDown to set up a Last Man Standing matchfor the Biggest Party Of The Summer.

Reigns and Lesnar main evented WrestleMania 38, and while the bout had a big-fight feel, the match itself was mildly underwhelming. Dave Meltzer gave the match three and a quarter stars, which feels about right. They didn't stink up AT&T Stadium by any stretch, but they didn't put on their feud-defining classic either. That's what Reigns and Lesnar have an opportunity to do at SummerSlam. Close the door on this rivalry for the foreseeable future with a knockdown, drag-out fight befitting of two of the top powerhouse wrestlers in the history of the business.
