Toy giant Hasbro has announced it will debut its Selfie Series of action figures at San Diego Comic-Con International later this month. Thanks to a partnership with 3D printing technology developer and manufacturer Formlabs, for $60 «a select number» of attendees will be able to have their likeness scanned and placed onto a fully posable, licensed, and highly detailed Power Ranger, Ghostbuster, G.I. Joe, Star Wars, or Marvel figure.
For anyone unable to make it out to SDCC in late July, note that the Hasbro Selfie Series is currently limited to collectors in the United states, and figures won't ship until sometime in the fall. Habro hasn't indicated how long it will take for the custom figure to be created and shipped after a digital face scan is completed and submitted. However, a small number of fans will be among the first to create their own and they--alongside Hasbro--will likely share more information about the experience soon. Check out the official announcement video below.
«Ten years ago, 3D printing was not at the place where it can reliably be used in these high-value, high-customization types of jobs, but we've gotten there.» said David Lakatos, chief product officer at Formlabs. «We have now the reliability and the precision… [to] shine in making one-of-a-kind products.»
If you're curious, Hasbro has created a website that walks you through the process, which includes downloading a dedicated app to scan and submit your likeness.
