With Diablo: Immortal receiving less-than-ideal reviews and being criticized across the board, Blizzard seems to be moving towards a new direction. A new job posting on Blizzard's website implies that a new survival game, that has yet to be announced, could end up having co-op multiplayer features.
Blizzard has been through the wringer recently with all the scandals going on behind the scenes including everything going on with the controversy surrounding Diablo: Immortal. Blizzard has been trying to move on to projects that had still been in production such as Overwatch 2, a new World of Warcraft mobile game, and Diablo 4.
Blizzard Looking to Follow Up Diablo Immortal with Mobile Warcraft Game
On the careers page on Blizzard's website, there is a job listing for Lead Social Game Designer that has a few clues about what kind of game it is recruiting for. Blizzard has already announced this new survival game in a new world but other than that not many details are known about it. The job posting says a successful candidate «will motivate players to engage with each other in ways both competitive and collaborative, forming new bonds of friendship or rivalry, and ultimately, developing those bonds into meaningful relationships.»
Blizzard is no stranger to the co-op genre with Warcraft and Diablo being their most notable IPs despite World of Warcraft's active player base dropping drastically since 2021. The notion of the game developer making a co-op survival game set in a new world outside its main IPs is a new yet familiar direction for Blizzard to move going forward.
It's not surprising that Blizzard's newest IP would go back to the roots it is already known for. This new game could be a bit of a risky decision for Blizzard
