EA has today confirmed a new internal studio its helped to set up as well as its first project: a third-person, single player Black Panther game. The team is called Cliffhanger Games and is based in Seattle, led by former VP and studio head of Monolith Productions (Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of War) Kevin Stephens. Working closely with Marvel Games, the studio has already recruited veterans of the God of War and Halo series.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, studio lead Kevin Stephens said: «We want our game to enable players to feel what it’s like to be worthy of the Black Panther mantle in unique, story-driven ways, and we want Cliffhanger Games to empower everyone on our team as we collaborate to bring this amazing world to life.» The game is still early in development, but the team is said to be working towards «an experienced team with diverse voices and perspectives», which is essential for «a superhero as important as Black Panther». No platforms for the game have been announced at the time of writing.
This isn't the first Black Panther game announced in recent years, as it's been confirmed Amy Hennig's studio is also using the superhero in a title alongside Captain America. That's a separate project from what EA has announced today, but the above has been rumoured for some time. Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb first shared word on the project from EA around this time last year, where he also noted it would be an open world experience.
