Industrial Light & Magic’s VFX supervisor Julian Foddy explains the process of creating Black Bolt’s death scene for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Director Sam Raimi’s hotly-anticipated return to the superhero genre follows Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he protects the universe-jumping America Chavez (Xóchitl Gomez) from Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen)—who’s embraced her identity as the Scarlet Witch and been corrupted by the Dark Hold while searching for her children. As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4—which continues to evolve its multiverse—Multiverse of Madness’ includes a handful of surprising cameos. For example, Anson Mount reprises his role as Black Bolt from Marvel's ABC television series Inhumans.
Partway through the film, Strange and America land in Earth-838 and are arrested by its team of superheroes known as the Illuminati. Black Bolt is one of the six members of the council, along with Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski), Captain Marvel/Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart). When the Scarlet Witch pursues America, she is stopped by the aforementioned group of heroes. Before Black Bolt can say anything, Wanda uses her magic to remove his mouth—which results in his vocal talents obliterating his own skull. Now, one of the artists behind that scene has detailed the process of creating it.
