Chains of Freedom, the next major game by Lithuanian studio Nordcurrent, was unveiled at the PC Gaming Show, mixing classic gaming biomonster horror themes with the popular turn-based action strategy genre.
Chains of Freedom takes place years after a meteorite crashes into the planet, unleashing a biocrystal called EDEN that morphs the world of the living into “supernatural mutations that prowl a wasteland of infected villages, military installations, and run-down factories.” The story follows a group from military squad, called the “Peacekeepers,” who seek to reunite in the apocalypse after a helicopter crash separates them.
It’s essentially XCOM with a Resident Evil-type beat, from the monsters to the protagonists’ premise of military/police forces trying to survive in infested lands. Much like other games in the turn-based strategy genre, players need to traverse these settings in the thick of combat, using the world around them as cover or for strategy to ensure victory against the creatures.
Chains of Freedom is slated for release on PC and consoles next year, including through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG.
