Warner Bros. has announced that Beetlejuice 2, the sequel to the 1988 cult classic film, will be released on September 6, 2024. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report.
Tim Burton will return as director and Michael Keaton will reprise his role as the titular character. Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is also attached to the project, set to play the daughter of Winona Ryder's character from the original movie.
The script for Beetlejuice 2 was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who are known for their work on the TV series Smallville and also Wednesday. Previous drafts of the script were written by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, who will produce the movie.
Warner Bros. has scheduled Beetlejuice 2 for a post-Labor Day release, a slot that has been successful for the studio in the past with horror films such as the It franchise and The Nun. The first Beetlejuice movie was a hit, grossing $80 million on a $15 million budget. It starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Catherine O'Hara, and Ryder.
Beetlejuice 2 will begin filming in London on Wednesday. The release window may position the sequel in competition with Marvel Studios' Blade, which is also scheduled for release on September 6, 2024. However, there may be a delay with Blade's production due to the current writer's strike.
The original Beetlejuice also spawned a Broadway musical produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, which had to close in 2020 due to the pandemic. It later reopened in 2022 and ran until early 2023, followed by a US tour.
