While a lot of the heavy hitters in today’s PlayStation Showcase tended to feature a lot of sequels, follow-ups, and new IPs from notable publishers big and small, there was one particular title that stood out due to it being the full-fledged debut for a new studio. That game would be Ultros, the debut title from Swedish developers Hadoque. Of course, this isn’t a team of complete newcomers, as Hadoque consists of industry veterans who have on titles such as the SteamWorld games, Stick It To The Man, Magicka, ad most notably, Hotline Miami, with world-renowned artist El Huervo providing a stunning soundtrack and psychedelic visuals for this game as well, as prominently seen in the reveal trailer below.
A metroidvania-style action-platformer, Ultros sees players exploring the cosmic alien landscape of The Sarcophagus, discovering the bizarre, beautiful, and even brutal beings that reside within it…and naturally slicing them to ribbons before they get a chance to kill you, leaving your remains scattered among the vibrant flora. But death is but a slap on the wrist here, as the demonic force residing in The Sarcophagus has our protagonist apparently trapped in a time loop, which they’re looking to eventually escape from. Thankfully, it looks like this world’s own greenery (and yellow-ery, and purple-ery) can help out as well, providing ways of getting around, and maybe helping players find a secret or two as well.
Ultros certainly looks like a stunner, both in the visuals and gameplay department, but will it truly wind up being a terrific first foot forward for Hadoque? Well, we have until 2024 to ponder that, when Ultros comes out for PC and PlayStation platforms, being a PlayStation console exclusive.
