Throughout their shared history within DC Comics lore, Batman and the Joker have been in countless battles, yet are still no closer to ultimately defeating each other, with Batman’s ‘no killing’ rule being the main reason behind the continued conflict. However, during one of Batman’s earliest fights with the Joker, he came up with a plan on how to defeat the Clown Prince of Crime once and for all without resorting to murdering the villain–though the specifics of Batman’s plan may have made murder a more humane option.
The Joker is Batman’s arch enemy as he represents all of which Batman works effortlessly to stop. While Batman is a dark, rigid, law-enforcing authority figure who uses fear to keep criminals in line, the Joker is a bright, flamboyant agent of chaos who uses comedy to make his acts of villainy that much more entertaining. The Joker is the antithesis of Batman in every conceivable way. Joker desperately tries to corrupt the Dark Knight and prove to him that they aren’t actually opposites at all but one and the same. Upon their third encounter, the Joker nearly unwittingly succeeds in this sinister mission long before he even showed that much interest in Batman at all.

In Batman #2 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Batman and Robin are startled to hear that the Joker is alive after seemingly being killed by his own blade in the previous issue. In Batman #1, Batman was successful in locking up the Joker in their first story together, but by the end of the issue, the Joker had escaped only to cause more trouble than he did before.
