Warning: contains spoilers for Batman Beyond: Neo Year #4!
One of the most enjoyable parts of reading a comic set in the future like Batman Beyond is learning the legacy of beloved characters, and Catwoman's legacy is sure to delight her fans. Batman Beyond is the story of Terry McGinnis, a teenager who takes up the mantle of Batman after Bruce Wayne has grown too old for the role. The show and the comics than have spun out of it have extensively covered the fates of various villains such as Mr. Freeze and the Joker, but up until this point they haven’t shown Selina Kyle’s impact on the future.
Catwoman, the alias of Selina Kyle, has grown a lot over the course of her existence. Initially starting out as a pure villain, she has become one of Gotham’s most important antiheroes. She has a big soft spot for the strays that have been cast aside by society, whether they be cats or humans, and so many of her stories feature Selina trying to protect those who can't depend on regular authority figures. While there have been non-canon stories like the recent Batman/Catwoman series by Tom King and Clay Mann that have imagined what Selina does in the future, the world of Batman Beyond has touched on the character quite little, despite including a futuristic version of Catwoman. This version of Catwoman isn’t directly connected to Selina however, just sharing her name. But Batman Beyond: Neo Year is finally showing fans that Selina’s true legacy extends beyond her copycat.
