A deleted scene from Lightyear reveals the cut origin story of the catchphrase «To infinity and beyond!» The iconic phrase is the motto of the toy Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen in the Toy Story franchise. Introduced as somewhat of an adversary to Tom Hanks' Sheriff Woody in the original 1995 film, Buzz has been a stalwart member of the franchise since its beginning.
Pixar has spun out the Toy Story universe into three successful sequels and a variety of short films, but this year they made their most daring move with the franchise yet. On June 17, 2022, they released Lightyear, which is meant to be the in-universe film that the toy Buzz is a tie-in product for. That film followed space rangers Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans) and Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) as they explore a distant planet before an incident sends Buzz many years forward in time. In the future, he is thrust into a brand new adventure with a crew including Alisha's granddaughter Izzy (Keke Palmer) to fight the evil Emperor Zurg (James Brolin).

This week, Cartoon Brew released a video of Lightyear director Angus MacLane explaining a scene that was cut from act one of the film that explains the origin of his famous catchphrase. The scene, which is the original introduction of Izzy Hawthorne as a child, was cut to tighten up the pacing of the film and is presented in a variety of storyboards, with audio from Evans' performance playing over them. After barging into his apartment, Izzy brags that her brother can count to infinity, but she wants to go beyond that, which Buzz insists is mathematically impossible. Check out the video below:
