It looks like it will be a Barbie world when the film premieres July 21. New early tracking numbers suggest the movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling could make as much as $80 million domestically opening weekend, doubling what's predicted for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barbie is estimated to haul in $70-$80 million, though Warner Bros. apparently thinks $60 million is more in the ballpark for the film. Either way, that would easily top early tracking for Oppenheimer, predicted to earn $40 million.
It will be bomb versus bombshell next month, even though rumors swirled at one point that Nolan's film was getting delayed. Barbie and Oppenheimer both premiere July 21, with the latter tracking to be one of Nolan's lowest openings since The Prestige brought in $14.8 million in 2006. His film is about the creation of the first atomic bomb and stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh.
Oppenheimer does have a much lower budget than Nolan's previous flick, Tenet, as Variety reports it was $100 million to make. As such, The Hollywood Reporter notes the tail for the R-rated movie will likely play a bigger factor in the film's box office success versus opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Barbie sees the iconic doll going from her world to the real world in a film directed by Lady Bird's Greta Gerwig. She also co-wrote the film with her husband, Noah Baumbach, who's helmed Marriage Story and White Noise. The Barbie movie soundtrack will include a power ballad sung by Gosling as Ken.
