Compiling a movie soundtrack is almost never easy, but director Greta Gerwig has built an incredible playlist made of some of today's top artists--and Ryan Gosling. The Barbie soundtrack is one of the most important tools at Gerwig's disposal that's about to paint the world pink.
Many of the film’s scenes have highly specific musical cues that she was seeking, which means she needed a team on board from the beginning to make the vision come alive. From the start, she knew she wanted a huge dance party song, which is what we get with «Dance the Night» and an '80s-style power ballad. The latter will be performed by Ken himself, Ryan Gosling, aptly titled «I'm Just Ken.»
Oscar- and seven-time Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Mark Ronson (A Star Is Born), along with collaborator Andrew Wyatt, were brought on board to put the songs together. Talking to Rolling Stone about the soundtrack, Ronson's hesitation about the project ended after he read the script.
«I don’t read a lot of scripts, but it was just everything I want in a movie,» Ronson recalled. «I was like, '[Even] if I don't get this gig, this is gonna be my favorite movie of the year.' » He was told that they needed at least the basis of a song in two weeks. Ronson and Wyatt put together «Dance the Night» from a playlist Gerwig had put together to get the vibe right.
The soundtrack also includes heavy hitters Lizzo, Charli XCX, PinkPantheress, Dua Lipa--who performs «Dance the Night», and recent sensation Ice Spice.
Barbie arrives in theaters on July 21.
