The British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) is starting a new process for its 2024 Game Awards. Today it released the longlist of all 60 games that are potentially up for awards, as opposed to previous years when it only revealed the shortlisted titles. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Baldur’s Gate 3 tops said list. BAFTA is also switching up the voting process for two awards as well: Instead of juries voting on Best Game and British Game categories, the votes are now open to all 1,000+ members of BAFTA. The remaining 15 awards are still decided by jury vote.
The longlist includes the game and how many awards for which it’s potentially nominated. Baldur’s Gate 3 leads with 15 nominations, followed shortly by Alan Wake with 14. The other major titles up for awards include Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (10), Hogwarts Legacy (9), Final Fantasy XVI and Tears of the Kingdom (both 8). Several indie games also made the list, including Cocoon, Dredge and Sea of Stars.
Jane Millichip, BAFTA CEO, said in a statement, “For 20 years, BAFTA has celebrated great talent in the games industry with the annual BAFTA Games Awards. This year, we hope to amplify that celebration by publishing our Best Games of 2023 list – the longlist for next year’s Awards, as voted for by games industry professionals – just in time to inspire some festive gameplay.”
BAFTA also revealed the ten longlisted nominees for four of its awards: Best Game, British Game, Best Performer in a Leading Role and Best Performer in a Supporting Role.
