Obsidian Entertainment is working on improvements to combat. This process was reportedly ongoing during Microsoft’s Developer Direct last month. However, the improvements will address some of the fans’ concerns about the upcoming RPG.
Avowed’s director, Carrie Patel, recently went on the Dropped Frames Podcast to discuss the game. The conversation was broad and not just focused on the recent showcase. However, the topic of fan reactions came up quickly in the interview. This studio is quite aware of how audiences felt about the gameplay shown at the event, and some of the issues that fans had are already things that Obsidian wanted to improve.
This includes the game’s combat, which some felt lacked a sense of impact. Avowed’s developers were already aware of this problem and are working on improving that aspect. “One of the heartening things has been seeing fans call out some of the things that we are actively working on, like the sense of hitting and impacts as you’re attacking enemies,” said Patel. She also noted that the Xbox Developer Direct gameplay was a few weeks old at the time of the show. “It’s kind of nice to always say like ‘yep, they saw it, we know it, trust us, we’re working on it,’” she said.
In addition to combat, YouTuber and Dropped Frames co-host CohhCarnage also asked Patel about the game’s use of environmental storytelling. Obsidian Entertainment used environmental storytelling heavily in Fallout: New Vegas, which conveyed a lot of information through object placement. However, the Xbox Direct did not give the impression that Avowed was doing the same. Patel didn’t provide a clear yes or no regarding whether the new game would feature similar things. However, she did say that item placement will “make sense for the setting.
