Avatar: The Way of Water details reveal the villains’ plan to take back what they lost in the first film. James Cameron’s Avatar was released in theaters over a decade ago, and told the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic Marine who replaces his deceased identical twin brother as the operator of a Na’vi-human hybrid “avatar.” While committed to humanity’s imperialistic cause, Jake is drawn into the world of Pandora after falling in love with princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and, in turn, the native culture. In addition to Worthington and Saldaña, the long-awaited sequel, The Way of Water, stars returning cast members Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Giovanni Ribisi alongside newcomers like Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel, Edie Falco, and Cliff Curtis.
The first film’s central conflict revolved around humanity’s desire to harvest Pandora for its precious metal dubbed unobtanium ($20 million per kilogram). With the help of the military, the RDA (Resources Development Administration) attempted to exploit/manipulate Pandora’s natives to better access their natural serves of the mineral. The end of the film saw the RDA seemingly defeated, with all those who opposed the Na’vi’s claim to Pandora sent home. In the sequel, the RDA is back and stronger than ever.

In a recent interview with Empire, producer Jon Landau talked about how the RDA now has Recoms aka Recombinants, avatars embedded with memories of human soldiers. And Recoms are just the tip of the RDA iceberg, which includes an armada and a new city in Bridgehead equipped with a 3D-printing weapons facility.
