Dead by Daylight, a video game franchise itself inspired by many iconic horror movies, is getting a big screen adaptation of its own. The juggernaut asymmetrical multiplayer smash hit will be produced by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, along with series creator Behaviour Interactive, but doesn’t yet have a screenwriter or director. This project is very much in its infancy, then!
“In Dead by Daylight, the Behaviour team has created a love letter to the world of horror, building an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains – perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation,” said Atomic Monster’s James Wan. “We’re big fans of the game at Atomic Monster, and are thrilled to be teaming up with Blumhouse to bring this frighteningly visceral world to the big screen.”
Blumhouse’s co-founder Jason Blum added: “We know there are so many fans of Dead by Daylight out there and think it's imperative we find someone who appreciates and loves the world as much as we do, to help us bring the game to the big screen. We know our partners at Behaviour and Atomic Monster will help us bring the best version of this game to life.”
There’s very little information in the press release, so consider this more of a statement of intent from all three parties, rather than anything concrete. It’s pretty easy to imagine what kind of film this will be, though: the crux of Dead by Daylight’s gameplay revolves around trying to escape from slasher icons, so we doubt the movie will be especially innovative or original. You probably shouldn’t expect those licensed Killers, like Freddy Krueger, to appear either!
