Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be revealed on Wednesday 15th May at 5PM BST / 9AM PT, Ubisoft has announced. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the new name for Assassin’s Creed Red.
A long-awaited, much requested game set in Feudal Japan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is certainly an evocative name for a game about a Japanese assassin, with the game pretty much guaranteed to cast you as a neophyte ninja as you delve into local politics and threats to the status quo by getting up close for some AC-style stabbing.
The game was first teased in September 2022 under the codename Red, though obviously very little was revealed at that time outside of the setting and the overarching form. Still, if you want to rewatch that 2022 showcase, which had plenty more in it about the franchise’s future, you can find it here:
Ubisoft has started off a countdown to the reveal on their social media channels with fans invited to solve an Hourglass puzzle, with some kind of reward for those who succeed. Can you figure it out?
It will be fascinating to see what kind of Assassin’s Creed game this is. At the 2022 showcase it was confirmed that it is coming from Ubisoft Quebec and will build on the open world RPG foundations of the last few mainline entries. Then again, Assassin’s Creed Mirage came out last year and felt like a fairly popular return to the series’ roots, with the caveats that it brought back a bunch of the issues of those earlier games as well.
This could well be the last outing of the open world RPG format, with the game after this to be Codename Hexe. This promises to be a new style of Assassin’s Creed game and the team is being led by Clint Hocking, who led the deeply systemic gameplay of Far Cry 2 and Watch Dogs Legion. Also, it definitely sounds quite witchy.
