Aspyr Says KOTOR 2 Switch DLC Was Canceled Because 'A Third Party Objected'

Aspyr has shed some light on the canceled DLC for the Switch port of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, pointing the blame at an objection from an unknown third party.

Spotted first by Axios, Aspyr's co-CEO Ted Saloch noted in a court filing that "Aspyr believed it would be able to release the content, but a third party objected, and Aspyr was unable to do so." However, the document failed to specify who the third party in question is. An Aspyr spokesperson told IGN in an email that the company "has no further comment to provide."

The document is part of a lawsuit in which plaintiff Malachi Mickelonis took legal action against Aspyr, alleging it had falsely represented that consumers who purchased KOTOR II would also get access to the "Restored Content DLC," and refused to give those who purchased the game a refund, instead opting to provide a complimentary code for another Star Wars game.

As Axios points out, Aspyr states the complementary key, which Mickelonis requested and received a code for another game, was a symbol of compensation for the company failing to release the once-planned DLC. But Mickelonis' legal counsel argues the gesture was not compensation for the canceled DLC but rather "a free gift" and did not constitute a full refund. Later in the month, the USCentral District of California will hold a hearing on Aspyr's motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

Aspyr released a Switch port of KOTOR II in 2022. In June 2022, Aspyr announced it was adding the original version's cut content into the Switch version later in the year. Nearly a year after the announcement, the company revealed the "Restored Content DLC" was canceled.
