With the recent strikes and boycott outcries, many fans are wondering if Warner Bros. has actually canceled or delayed Jason Momoa’s next DCEU outing. Here’s all you need to know about Aquaman 2’s release status.
Ever since Warner Bros. canceled DC’s Batgirl movie in its post-production stage, talks about other DC cancelations have run rampant. While many demanded The Flash to be canceled due to controversies surrounding Ezra Miller, there has been some confusion about the cancelation of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as well.
False rumors stemmed from people wanting to boycott Aquaman 2 largely due to Amber Heard’s involvement in it. But rest assured, the film will be hitting the theaters. It won’t meet the same fate as Batgirl or James Wan’s canceled Trench movie which would have focused on Black Manta.
The first Aquaman is the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. Therefore, even if the hype for the sequel has been diminished due to James Gunn’s DCU reboot announcement, it was unlikely to be canceled.
With Warner Bros. delaying Dune 2 due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, there were scares for Aquaman 2 to be delayed as well. However, that isn’t happening and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still holds its December 20, 2023 release date.
The movie has already been delayed for a year, as it was originally supposed to arrive in December 2022.
Furthermore, we shouldn’t expect another delay because the studio might want to put as much gap between Aquaman 2 (the last DCEU movie) and Superman: Legacy (the first DCU film) as possible. That way, James Gunn and Co will be able to get people ready and hyped about the next regime from 2025 onwards.
