The actresses have had longstanding tension that culminated in Cattrall refusing to take part in the Sex and the City revival. Cattrall, who played the sex-positive PR exec Samantha Jones, has been vocal about being done with the franchise but fans still hoped she would change her mind.
And Just Like That has become the most-watched show ever on HBO Max but it has also been one of the most divisive. Fans of Sex and The City have criticized how the show has handled certain storylines, with the three main women (Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York-Goldenblatt, and Miranda Hobbes) seemingly acting out-of-character compared to the original series. One of the biggest criticisms has been how the show handled the absence of Samantha. In the show, Samantha has a falling out with Carrie & co. and moves to London. She occasionally contacts Carrie via text and sends flowers for Mr. Big's funeral, but many felt that a friend as loyal as Samantha would never be so distant or petty.

In a Variety interview, Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie, was asked if she would welcome Kim Cattrall back if Cattrall wanted to return to the series. Parker said that it would be hard to welcome her back to And Just Like That. Cattrall has very publicly shared negative views regarding the show and her relationship with Parker. Famously, a third Sex and the City movie was in the works until Cattrall backed out. Parker stated it would be hard to imagine Cattrall dropping this tense history to return to the show.
