Amazon has come up with a solution for advertisers who either can't afford or can't be bothered to produce high-quality images of the products they are trying to sell.
The Amazon Ads team is launching a new image generation service in beta, which takes advantage of generative AI to place products in realistic, but completely fake settings with a short description and the push of a button. If it proves popular, we should hopefully never see a photo of a toaster or an air fryer on a white background again.
Amazon describers its new AI as being designed to "remove creative barriers and enable brands to produce lifestyle imagery that helps improve their ads’ performance." As the video above demonstrates, regardless of what's being advertised, the AI can produce a background setting that is both appropriate and realistic for the product in question.
Colleen Aubrey, senior vice president of Amazon Ads Products and Technology, explains "Providing tools to make image generation simple and easy is another way for us to support advertisers while also making the ads our customers see more engaging and visually rich ... It’s a perfect use for generative AI—less effort and better outcomes."
The image generation tool will be made available through the Amazon Ad Console, but will initially be limited to select advertisers. Eventually, though, all advertisers should be able to lower their ad budget by relying on AI for their realistic backgrounds.
