A returning face in After Life season 3 makes season 1's cringe supermarket scene even funnier. Ricky Gervais' Tony always encouraged talented young journalist Sandy to pursue her career beyond the Tambury Gazette, and it seems Mandeep Dhillon's character has done precisely that by the time After Life season 3 begins. Her chair is taken by "new intern" Coleen, who sadly lost her previous job due to the pandemic. Prickly to begin with, Coleen complains to Tony about starting from the bottom of her career ladder after previously working up to management at the Mini-Mart — an all too familiar story post-2020.
Tony quickly takes a liking to Coleen's dour, no-nonsense demeanor, and they bond over the course of After Life season 3, with Ricky Gervais' character even helping Coleen find a new flat to rent. Before long, Coleen has endeared herself to the Tambury faithful… despite possessing a limited understanding of what a local newspaper actually does. Almost a female version of Karl Pilkington, Coleen feels right at home among the After Life cast, and is played by stand-up comedian/The End of the F**king World actress Kath Hughes.

After Life viewers may not immediately realize, but Kath Hughes' Coleen isn't a new addition for season 3 — the character made a brief, albeit hilarious, cameo in the Netflix comedy's very first episode. Credited only as «Supermarket Assistant,» Tony visits the Mini-Mart to buy dog food and asks the uniformed Coleen where to find some.
