Acer Breached, Hacker Selling Access to 160GB of Stolen Data
Acer has been breached by a hacker who claims to have stolen confidential data from the PC maker, including files on the company’s products.
The culprit is now selling access to the stolen files on a forum frequented by hackers. “The leak contains a total 160GB of 655 directories, and 2,869 files,” the attacker wrote in the post.
Allegedly, the stolen data includes confidential presentations, product model documentation, and data about the BIOS system used on Acer computers. On the forum, the hacker also posted samples of some of the stolen files.
“Honestly there's so much s*** that it'll take me days to go through the list of what was breached lol,” added the hacker, who is asking interested users to pay up in cryptocurrency.
Acer confirms it suffered a breach. “We have recently detected an incident of unauthorized access to one of our document servers for repair technicians. While our investigation is ongoing, there is currently no indication that any consumer data was stored on that server,” the company tells PCMag in a statement.
Acer suffered at least two other hacking incidents in 2021. In February of that year, the ransomware group REvil compromised the PC maker’s IT systems, and demanded a $50 million ransom. Then in October, hackers hit an Acer “after-sales service system” in India.
As a result, the latest incident may undermine trust in Acer’s security and represent another security risk for the company. The hacker also claims the stolen data includes details about Acer’s backend infrastructure.
