GKIDS has announced theatrical rerelease dates for 2016’s acclaimed coming-of-age anime movie. Since its debut, the film has received positive reviews from critics. It currently holds a 95% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
A Silent Voice will officially head back to U.S. theaters nationwide on December 15 and December 16. The film was directed by Naoko Yamada from a screenplay written by Violet Evergarden’s Reiko Yoshida. This comes ahead of Yamada’s next anime movie The Colors Within, which is expected to make its U.S. debut on January 24, 2025.
It featured the voices of Miyu Irino as Shoya, Saori Hayami as Shoko, Aoi Yūki as Yuzuru, Kensho Ono as Tomohiro, Yūki Kaneko as Naoka, Yui Ishikawa as Miyoko, Megumi Han as Miki Kawai, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Satoshi, and more. The film was a production by Kyoto Animation, based on Yoshitoki Ōima’s manga of the same name. It is executive produced by Hideaki Hatta, Susumu Okinaka, and Osamu Yoshiba, with Toshio Iizuka, Kensuke Tateishi, Mikio Uetsuki and Nagaharu Ôhashi serving as producers.
“After transferring into a new school, a deaf girl, Shoko Nishimiya, is bullied by the popular Shoya Ishida,” reads the film’s synopsis. “As Shoya continues to bully Shoko, the class turns its back on him. Shoko transfers and Shoya grows up as an outcast. Alone and depressed, the regretful Shoya finds Shoko to make amends. “A Silent Voice” is a moving coming-of-age drama that depicts the struggles of adolescence through its memorable characters and beautiful animation.”
