One detail mention in Avengers: Age of Ultron about Thor's quest for the Infinity Stones makes an often overlooked Thanos Avengers: Infinity War feat even more impressive. As a consequence of Loki using two of the Infinity Stones, and later a third one appearing in Thor: The Dark World, Thor becomes the Avengers with the most connection with the Stones and their importance before Infinity War — even directly referencing as much in Avengers: Age of Ultron. That, plus the fact Thor is a 1500 years old Asgardian god, made him a voice to be heard when it comes to the Infinity Stones.
There has always been a fine line between magic and highly advanced science in the MCU, and the gods of Asgards were right in the middle of it. How omnipotent and knowledgeable Odin and Thor really are was never made clear, but the fact is that MCU's Asgardians were aware of crucial events in the universe. Odin had a replica of Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet, Loki worked for Thanos, and Thor had come in contact with at least three Infinity Stones before Thanos' Infinity War snap.

In Infinity War, it is revealed that Xandar – the Nova Empire capital shown in Guardians of the Galaxy – was destroyed off-screen by Thanos during his search for the Power Stone. By making the fall of an important MCU planet just a throwaway line, Infinity War set the tone for what the Thanos' threat was going to be.
